About the organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco’s homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

Compensation: $165-185k annually

Schedule: Full time, primarily Monday to Friday

Position Description:
The Chief Program Officer leads our efforts to deliver services to homeless and at-risk families. They work closely with the CEO to set programmatic strategy, identify internal and external opportunities to expand our work and deepen our impact, and supervise senior directors for our three primary service areas: Housing Programs, Shelter Programs and Support Service Programs.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Serve as a thought partner to the CEO and as a key member of the organization’s leadership team.
  • Set a vision and strategy for our entire spectrum of services for families.
  • Support Senior Directors in the delivery of program services, staff supervision and professional development.
  • Actively promote and support strong collaboration, coordination and teamwork among all Compass programs and departments.
  • Represent Compass’ programs externally in the community.
  • Build strong relationships with funders. Ensure that contractual obligations are met or exceeded, that funds are spent effectively, and that outcomes are met and conveyed successfully.
  • Work with the Development team to ensure compliance with existing grants and contracts and identify and pursue opportunities to sustain and support existing service offerings and expand when appropriate and in alignment with the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Work with the Impact + Learning team to use data to inform our work, diving deeply into what’s working, what’s not, and how staff across the agency can better target our efforts to improve family outcomes.
  • Interface with the Finance department and Senior Directors in the construction and oversight of budgets, ensuring that funds are expended appropriately and within the proper timeframes.
  • Work with the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging to ensure that services are imbued with an inclusive, equitable and anti-racist perspective.
  • Be prepared to support and interact with programs on the micro level when needed, particularly during leadership transitions or when programs are in flux.

Qualifications:
For this position, we are looking for someone who has significant nonprofit leadership experience, thoroughly understands the homeless services landscape, and is deeply and demonstrably committed to the mission of Compass Family Services.

Specific qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of experience in staff supervision, including direct and indirect reports. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, coach, and mentor.
  • At least 5 years of experience developing and managing complex nonprofit programs similar to those that the Chief Program Officer will oversee.
  • Deep understanding and experience with direct service programs for homeless and at-risk populations.
  • Experience overseeing contracts, managing budgets, and maintaining relationships with funders.
  • Strong communication, advocacy, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience supporting individuals in crisis.
  • Willingness to roll up one’s sleeves and get involved in the day-to-day running of the programs and the organization.
  • Deep commitment to and demonstrated success discussing, integrating, and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging throughout a complex and dynamic organization.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary range: $165,000 - 185,000 annually
  • Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation in the first year, 5 in subsequent years. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave, time off for education.
  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long-term disability and life insurance.
  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of employee’s salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-6.

  • Work location: 37 Grove Street, San Francisco. Primarily in person.
